“Memories” is a musical portrait of the Palermo photo-journalist Letizia Battaglia, who passed away in 2022.

Letizia Battaglia represents the woman-artist who documents current events without compromising and without the use of clichés. She’s capable of telling the truth as it is, for better or worse. In each of her photographs, she always put the subject in the foreground regardless or not if they were a perpetrator. Nicoletta has transferred this approach to her way of composing music, “photographing” what she sees, bringing it to the score as it is, always adding a bit of herself. During an important interview with her niece, Marta Sollima, Ms. Solliman shared useful anecdotes for writing the texts and music for the project.

“Memories” immortalizes Letizia Battaglia’s career from different points of view: the kind and approachable Letizia; Letizia who finds and sees herself in the little girls residing in Palermo’s alleyways; the photographer of judges and criminals… In short: “born from a secular Leica. Woman, mother and wife speak to the world in freedom”.

In the album, another woman is honored. She is Claudia Grimaz. She was a wonderful Friulian singer, one of those voices that still echoes within the walls of theaters and beyond. The song chosen to honor her is “Gusta mi magla padnala”, a song belonging to traditional Serbian music interpreted by Claudia Grimaz during her rich artistic career.

Documentary “My Name is Battaglia”
by Cécile Allegra, Available on RaiPlay

Letizia Battaglia made her life a conquest and her art a lifelong commitment.
She documented mafia crimes, exposed corruption, gave visibility to the marginalized, captured the tenderness of children, and the resilience of women’s bodies.
Through her iconic shots and the voices of those close to her, the bloody years of contemporary Italian history resurface, captured through the eyes of a photographer in love with freedom.
